Formation, measuring, and sorting are essential steps in battery cell production, ensuring optimal performance and quality. Formation involves the first charging and discharging cycles, where cells are placed in special carriers within formation racks and connected via spring-loaded contact pins. They undergo precisely controlled current and voltage cycles, embedding lithium ions into the anode’s graphite structure and forming the Solid Electrolyte Interface (SEI). Formation parameters vary based on cell chemistry and manufacturer specifications, significantly impacting cell performance. During degassing, gas generated in larger pouch cells during the first charge is expelled using pressurized carriers that direct it into a gas bag. In a vacuum chamber, the gas bag is pierced, and gases are safely extracted before the cell is sealed under vacuum. The gas bag is then disposed of as hazardous waste. Optional final folding and sealing reduce the pouch cell’s external dimensions. Extracted gases must be treated per environmental and occupational safety regulations before release. Aging is the final quality assurance step, where cell performance is monitored over up to three weeks by measuring open circuit voltage (OCV). Cells undergo high-temperature (HT) aging first, followed by normal-temperature (NT) aging, and are stored in dedicated aging shelves or towers. If cell characteristics remain stable throughout the process, the cell is deemed fully functional and ready for delivery. Unlike formation, pouch cells are not pressurized during aging, and the process duration depends on the manufacturer and cell chemistry used.
