MBX2

Overview

MBX2 is a mobile, hardened test set for powerful communication analysis of substation automation systems. The platform is described as a mobile solution for quick assessments and temporary monitoring and as providing the performance needed to simulate and test both the whole communication network of the SAS and intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) in detail. MBX2 includes a quad-core processor to support demanding digital substation applications. Four SFP slots allow connection of fiber and Ethernet ports to different network segments, and control ports in the back isolate the testing PC from the system under test. The unit supports hardware time stamping for IEEE 1588 PTP and offers a DIN rail option for permanent installation, with both AC and DC power supplies available. Security features include a cryptoprocessor, Secure and Measured Boot, full-disk encryption, signed and encrypted updates, a secure production process, and IEC 62443 certification is in progress. Your computer does not require administrator rights to set up IP addresses for an IED simulation. MBX2 and its software are used to test SCADA and substation automation systems (SAS) in a highly secure way and to perform quick assessments and temporary monitoring, for example during commissioning. The hardware and software allow simulation and testing of the entire communication network of the SAS and detailed testing of IEDs. StationScout, IEDScout, and StationGuard can be executed on MBX2: StationScout simulates and tests SAS with automated test plans, visualizes system status, detects problems precisely, and enables signal tracing; IEDScout provides detailed insight into IEC 61850 functions, visualizes IED data objects and attributes, and observes communication activities; StationGuard combines cybersecurity and functional monitoring and uses an Intrusion Detection System to identify cyber threats, prohibited activities, and various malfunctions in the SAS.
