MATE-XB Exoskeleton

Overview

MATE-XB is a battery-free, non-powered wearable robotic exoskeleton that stores human energy in a spring and provides proven lumbar support during lifting and bending. It uses a passive mechanical kinematic chain that facilitates free trunk movement, is designed to be compact around the human body, and addresses human–exoskeleton kinematic compatibility. The garment interface uses breathable and bio-compatible materials and a wide contact area to distribute reaction forces without creating high-force points. The Torque Generating Box (TGB) stores and transforms potential mechanical energy to create an adjustable assistive torque; assistance is proportional to the torque generated by the upper part of the body, provides gentle assistance up to 25 kg, can be tuned over 5 levels, and does not hinder walking. The unit has a lightweight carbon fiber structure, is easy to wear and quickly adjustable to fit virtually any body frame, and was developed in collaboration with Esselunga, which helped validate and test the exoskeleton. MATE-XB provides passive lumbar support during lifting and bending and supports the lower back when bending with the legs (squatting), bending forward, or during repetitive lifting of loads. It is described as helping workers lift heavy objects and move cumbersome loads with less physical effort and fatigue, and is able to support workers handling loads of up to 25kg while allowing full mobility and no hindrance when walking.
