Diode Element Technology: the diode pump comprises a positively charged anode ring-element and a negatively charged titanium (Ti) cathode immersed in a magnetic field; electrons strike ambient gas molecules to create positive ions, light ions (H2/He) accelerate toward and penetrate the Ti layer while heavy ions sputter Ti onto the anode ring's inner side, and getterable gases like H2, N2 and O react with Ti and are captured, with sputtering and gettering effects combining to produce the diode ion pump pumping effect. StarCell Element Technology: the StarCell is a modified cathode geometry that increases the probability of reflecting noble gases as high energy neutrals toward the anode, and titanium cathodes provide high pumping speed for H2, described as the residual gas in the XHV range. SEM Anode Design: the Agilent patented anode design reduces empty volumes, sharp edges, and metallic whiskers to keep leakage current extremely low and improve pressure reading performance. The pump can be used as a vacuum gauge in scanning electron microscopes (SEM) because the ion current it generates is proportional to the level of vacuum and the SEM Anode Design minimizes leakage current to improve pressure readings. The StarCell and diode element technologies support pumping of noble gases and getterable gases; titanium cathodes are specified to provide high pumping speed for H2, and sputtering plus gettering effects enable capture of H2, N2 and O.
