Overview

TGD is a thickness and profile measuring system for use in production lines for cold and hot rolled strips and sheets, using a measuring procedure free of contact. It uses a high-performance electromagnetic measuring process in which the measuring sensor contains an exciting coil and a measuring coil that together with the material to be measured form a transformer; the exciting coil is the primary and the measuring coil the secondary winding, with the primary driven by a high-performance triangular alternating current and the induced voltage on the secondary corresponding to the strip thickness. In accordance with the prescribed nominal thickness, the amplitude and frequency of the primary circuit are regulated so that the material is in high polarization, and measurement and evaluation are performed via a real-time microprocessor system with integration of the acquired data into QM systems. Depending on the system one- or two-sided measurement is possible, measurements are reported to have high accuracy and short response times, and the system provides measurements unaffected by emulsions, lubricants, dust, etc. Technical performance data include: Repeatability accuracy: better than 0.2 %; Measuring accuracy: better than 0.5 %; Minimum strip width: 90 mm; Strip thickness: 0.01 – 3 mm; Power supply: 3 x 400 V AC, 50 Hz (standard). TGD is intended for use in production lines for quality control of cold and hot rolled strips and sheets. Acquired measurement and evaluation data can be integrated into QM systems, and the system is described as providing reliable measurements even under extreme conditions unaffected by emulsions, lubricants, dust, etc.
