Overview

Planoform 650 Ultra is a heavy-duty machine platform designed for single point diamond flycutting of plano surfaces in non-ferrous materials requiring optical quality surface and flatness characteristics. The machine supports up to 3 axes (X, Z standard; C optional), includes on-machine metrology, and operates facing a vacuum chuck. The controller is Precitech UPx running a QNX real time operating system with a programming resolution of 0.01 nm and PMDI axis interface cards. The sealed natural granite base is provided for long term stability and the machine uses a self-leveling dual chamber vibration isolation system. The X traversing axis is a linear motor driven hydrostatic oil bearing box-type slideway and the Z axis is a needle roller slideway actuated by a preloaded ball screw assembly with brushless DC motor, brake and counterbalance. Standard features include tilt-head adjustment, liquid cooled slides, hydrostatic oil bearing slideways, and motorized air bearing spindles supplied with a 3 year warranty. Guaranteed performance for diamond flycutting is specified for a 100 mm diameter part with form accuracy 64 0.158 5m (bb/4) PV and surface roughness 64 4 nm Sa (Cu) and 64 5 nm Sa (Al). Travel and motion specifications are X Travel: 650 mm and Z Travel Vertical: 300 mm, with Tool Swing: 300 mm (450 mm optional) and Heel Angle Adjust: -5b0 - 25b0. Maximum X axis feedrate is 1500 mm/min. (118 in./min.) and position feedback resolution is 34 pm (0.034 nm). The flycutting spindle is the Heavy Duty HD-160 featuring a slot type thrust air bearing, steel shaft/bronze journal, and integral brushless motor. Spindle motion accuracy is axial/radial 64 25 nm, spindle max speed is 5,000 RPM, and thermal control is provided by a liquid cooled motor housing and journal bearing (optional chiller required). Ultimate load capacity is 170 kg (375 lbs) @100 PSI and 256 kg (564 lbs) @150 PSI, axial stiffness 350 N/5m (2,000,000 lbs./in.) and radial stiffness 175 N/5m (1,000,000 lbs./in.). Flycutting toolholders carry two tools with a wheel diameter of 355 mm (14 in.), approximate tool location at 305 mm (12 in.) diameter of rotation, and allow adjustments in rake, roll, azimuth and depth of cut. The machine also supports cylindrical machining using X and Z axes and provides a tip/tilt workholding table and head tilt adjustment that can be used to change the tool sweep into an elliptical shape for producing elliptical mirrors.
