BGFT battery ground fault tracer

Overview

The BGFT battery ground fault tracer is a discontinued, dual-range instrument that identifies, traces and locates ground faults in ungrounded DC systems. It is mains powered and includes a dual range (high/low power switch), offering a 50 V range to locate high-impedance faults and a 15 V range for added safety. The transmitter outputs a 20 Hz test signal and the instrument provides both voltage and current outputs; troubleshooting steps reference an approximately 50 V voltage reading and an approximately 1A current reading at about 32 V during output tests. Signal strength is adjustable for operation in high electrical noise environments, the receiver uses a low-pass filter to detect the 20 Hz signal, and the instrument can characterise resistive and capacitive magnitudes to simplify fault tracing; an optional BGFS simulator is available for training. Locate ground faults in ungrounded DC systems while the system remains energised, eliminating trial-and-error procedures. Operate in high electrical noise environments by adjusting test-signal strength and distinguish resistive versus capacitive (including phantom) fault characteristics during tracing.
