XPIDER Gantry Milling Machine

Overview

The XPIDER represents a concept of high-speed "top gantry" milling machine that incorporates unique structural elements and functions and is described as providing temperature stability and high speed. It includes Eco Design features: Stand-by function and Auto Switch off function, saving 20% of the total energy consumption. The machine uses a mixed structure of "HDC" concrete and steel, where the "HDC" concrete is a material of high density mixed with micro-fibres developed by Nicolás Correa; the stated advantages of the "HDC" are: - High damping capacity - High rigidity - Thermal stability Kinematic and precision features include High Feed Rates of 45 m/min in X, Y and Z axes with optional 60 m/min in X and Y, an octagonal ram section that reduces the distance between the ram centre and the crossbeam centre to improve surface finish, and direct transmission to the drive of the vertical axis and of the spindle with a cylindrical watercooled motor to guarantee precision and rigidity. The crossbeam is composed of three layers of steel-insulation-steel to minimise geometrical changes due to temperature variations, and steel torsion bars in the crossbeam are specified to minimise deformation from flexion and torsion, enhance geometry and increase roughing capacity. Machine dynamic adjustment is described as including a specific electrospindle designed to obtain finishes at high rpms and parametrizable dynamic performance for ROUGHING OPERATION and FINISHING OPERATION; vertical axis temperature control is achieved by air recirculation through the ram to improve geometrical stability. Head options include UAD Technology universal and orthogonal indexing milling heads with patented rotation every 0,02º, and a 5 axes "Twist" type 2-axis contouring head with built in electrospindle or spindle geared transmission.
