SMP Substation automation platform

Overview

The SMP Substation automation platform combines data concentrator, protocol translator, event collector and logic processor functions and includes an integrated HMI and secure remote access for maintenance to substation and field devices. The SMP SG-4260 model is rack mountable (19 inches), 2U, with up to 32 serial ports and up to 10 Ethernet ports, fiber or metallic, with VLAN tagging and multihoming; it offers two (2) optional built-in SFP-based ports (1 GbE). Synchronization options include IRIG-B and PTP—IEEE Std 1588-2008, with time distribution via IRIG-B, SNTP or protocols, and an optional satellite-synchronized clock (GNSS) with access to GPS and GLONASS constellations (not field-upgradable). The platform features an advanced Ethernet module with Standard/PRP/HSR/PTP capabilities, built-in HMI and alarm management, optional dual hot-swappable power supplies, extended input voltage range, an optional field upgradeable solid-state drive (SSD) for data logging, a complete redundancy scheme (systems, networks (PRP/HSR), links, IEDs, power supplies), cybersecure design, and substation-grade hardware. Eaton states the SMP Substation automation platforms are designed to operate without any maintenance for their entire lifetime when used under normal conditions, and the SMP SG-4260 comes with a 10-Year limited warranty. The platform is used in thousands of substations worldwide as a SCADA gateway and substation data concentrator, supporting IEC 61850 and GOOSE, DNP3, Modbus, IEC 60870-5-101/104 and OPC UA over serial or network connectivity to tie together modern and legacy IEDs. As a substation HMI it provides diagrams, comprehensive alarm processing and Sequence of Event (SOE) logging, and can be accessed locally by connecting a screen to the video port or via a web browser. Other explicit use cases include asset monitoring gateway for collecting data from dissolved gas analyzers, breaker, bushing and transformer monitors; event collector gateway for retrieving oscillography and fault records and Digital Fault Records (DFRs); phasor data concentrator for collecting and publishing PMU data; secure remote access gateway with encrypted communications, user authentication, invalid password account lockout and access logs; RTU upgrade to replace legacy RTUs; and microgrid controller using the IEC 61131-3 SoftPLC and logic functions.
