The K30700 contains state-of-the-art electronics and performs ratiometric measurement of reflectance using two calibration points: a black cavity standard designed to have nearly zero reflectance and a calibrated standard plaque traceable to a national standard. The first calibration point is the "dark" or "zero" offset; when a plaque of known diffuse reflectance is placed on the search unit it produces a voltage in the photosensor array proportional to the light reflected, providing the reference point. Test method example: after aging and cooling, fuel samples are filtered and the average amount of filterable insolubles is estimated by measuring the light reflectance of the filter pads, with the 100% and 0% extremes of the reflectance rating range defined by an unused filter pad and a commercial black standard.
