MIKRON MILL S and X series

Overview

MIKRON MILL S and X series are compact, five-axis milling machines that use all-linear direct-drive motors for dynamic response, high acceleration, and precise positioning. The series offers axis feed rates up to 100 m/min and accelerations up to 1.5 g, with linear direct-drive motors in all axes and high spindle speeds up to 42,000 min-1. Active thermal management is provided by Ambient Robust linear motor technology, and STEP TEC high-speed spindles are used with OptiCool and CoolCore thermal solutions to limit heat transfer and minimize temperature fluctuations. The machines can be equipped with Heidenhain TNC 7 or Siemens SINUMERIK ONE controls enhanced by patented Smart Machine modules, and the S/X U series supports machine-robot integration and automation readiness. The series includes a milling-plus-jig-grinding capability with a closed grinding process (grinding + measuring) and acoustic emission (AE) sensors on the dressing spindle, plus an optional AE sensor for grinding monitoring. Three- or five-axis simultaneous grinding on the same machine can achieve surface quality of < Ra 0.06 µm, and automated parts changing does not impact standard workpiece dimensions or the standard pallet changer. STEP TEC spindle options listed include 30,000 min-1 (HSK-E40), 42,000 min-1 (HSK-E40), and 36,000 min-1 (HSK-E50). The MIKRON MILL S and X series are presented for complex 5-axis machining tasks and are cited specifically for automotive reflector mold machining. The series is also described for manufacturing impellers, turbochargers, vacuum compressors, and medical parts such as bone saw guides and dental components. For a cited vacuum compressor application using Aluminium, the input lists machining time < 19 h, surface finish Ra < 0.1 µm, and accuracy ± 0.1 mm. The combined milling and closed grinding workflow is presented to reduce part manufacturing steps and increase surface quality, with three- or five-axis grinding able to achieve < Ra 0.06 µm and automated parts changing enabling 3 µm machining accuracy and less than 0.06 µm surface roughness.
